Eleven placement students and one full time Surveyor from Down District Council are participating in Building Control training being held at the University of Ulster over five Mondays in November.

Topics covered include the Role of Building Control, Legislation, the Building Regulations and Technical Booklets, Fire Safety issues and Enforcement along with Risk Assessment and Health and Safety on Site, other areas of work undertaken by Building Control and the Future of the Building Control Service.
For many years Building Control had no formal Induction Training for anyone new into Building Control. New surveyors were given a copy of the Regulations and the Technical Booklets to read, mentored for a few weeks to introduce them to the area and from there they were on their own. For the last six or seven years Induction courses, introduced by Ken Hunter of Southern Group, have provided a briefing on much of the background and justification for what Building Control does.
Speakers from across the province are bringing together their extensive experience to pass on some of their knowledge to these new recruits.
Over six three-hour sessions the delegates will receive the basic information to get them started in Building Control, and while the majority of the current participants may be students, it is hoped that with the right training over their placement year they will consider a future career in Building Control
